Bullough about sadomasochism:According to the American historian and sexologist Vern L. Bullough (picture), sadomasochism is about absolutely voluntaryness, reciprocity and equality. "Most sadomasochists live a entirely normal and law-abiding life gaining the society. You will not be able to indentify them neither in the street, nor at the workplace", he says.

According to Bullough, sadomasochism was neither an illness nor a sin before the Austro-German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing published the book Psychopathia sexualis in 1886 and later editions (Bullough, V. L., & Bullough, B., 1977. Sin, sickness & sanity. New York: Garland Publishing).
Vern L. Bullough (1928-2006), among many awards, have received the Alfred Kinsey Award for distinguished sex research.

Sexolog og professor i historie, Vern L. Bullough har latt seg intervjue om ulike seksuelle orienteringer av Levi Fragell i bladet til Human-Etisk Forbund i Norge. Bullough er grunnlegger av "The Center for Sex Research" ved California State University, Northridge, USA og visepresident i humanistenes verdensforbund, IHEU.

I følge sexolog og historiker Vern Bullough (1928-2006), ble SM eller sadomasochisme verken betraktet som sykdom eller en synd før den tyskøsterrikske psykiateren Richard von Krafft-Ebing publiserte sin bok Psychopathia sexualis i 1886. Krafft-Ebing introduserte etterhvert begrepene Sadisme og Masochisme etter forfatterne Marquis de Sade og Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. (Bullough & Bullough 1977).
Blant mange priser, har Bullough mottatt Kinseyprisen for sitt banebrytende arbeid innen faget sexologi.
